Doon is where Kitchener's newest foundations and some of its oldest sit a few minutes apart. The signs are diagonal cracks from basement window corners, doors that jam on the second floor, and a stair-step crack in the brick veneer outside. The fix is helical or push piers under the settled section, engineer-designed and permitted through the City of Kitchener. Down the hill, the old village of Doon along the Grand River near Conestoga College, Pioneer Tower and the Doon Heritage Village has century stone and brick houses on rubble foundations with the full stone list — washed-out mortar, loose stones, rotten sills — and lots on the river flats where soft soil lets a stone wall with no footing sink. Anything near the river is in the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area. Both ends of Doon get the same measured site visit, and both are inside Kitchener, so there is no travel charge.

Do you charge more to work outside Kitchener?
Not inside the city. For Waterloo, Cambridge, Breslau, New Hamburg and the townships, travel is built into the written quote up front rather than added afterwards. Structural work is not a quick visit, so the drive is a small part of it.
Are foundations different in Waterloo and Cambridge than in Kitchener?
Somewhat. Parts of Waterloo sit on the sand and gravel of the Waterloo Moraine, which drains well and settles less than Kitchener clay, though the older stone foundations uptown have the same mortar and sill problems. Galt in Cambridge has more cut-stone century foundations than anywhere else in the Region, and Preston and Hespeler have the same block-in-clay walls as Kitchener's east side.
