Breslau is two places. The old village and the farms around it, on the flats east of the Grand River near the Region of Waterloo International Airport, have century farmhouses and village homes on rubble-stone foundations, often with no real footing under them, laid in lime mortar that has been washing out for a hundred years. The problems are the usual stone list — loose stones, rotten sills, bulged sections — plus settlement, because the river flats and the old creek lines carry soft, wet soil that a stone wall with no footing sinks into. Then there is the new Breslau: the subdivisions built on the village's edges over the last twenty years, on poured concrete, across former farmland that was graded and filled before the streets went in. Settlement at a corner where the footing straddles native soil and fill is the main structural problem there, showing up as diagonal cracks from basement windows and doors that jam upstairs, and the fix is piering under the settled section. Anything near the Grand River is in the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area, and excavation there needs their permit alongside the building permit from the Township of Woolwich. Breslau is a short drive from Kitchener along Victoria Street or the Fairway Road bridge, and the site visit, the engineer's involvement and the permits are the same as in the city.
